This past weekend saw the Ottawa Centre Novice A Ice Dogs battle it out at the First Annual Cumberland Dukes House League Showdown at the new Richcraft Senplex last weekend. The team was pitted against 15 other teams from the surrounding Ottawa Area including 14 teams outside the Bytown Minor Hockey League.
Despite missing some key players the team put out an excellent effort playing smarter, harder and as a group. The defense made concerted effort to tighten up knowing this would be the only way to neutralize some of the best A players in the city especially on the BIG ICE at the SensPlex.
Led by Jackson Arrango's offensive explosion and team captain Malcolm Baar's tenacious two-way play, the  Ice Dogs rolled through the round-robin portion with a 3-0 record giving up just a single goal against. The semi-final saw the team continue its winning ways with a 4-1 victory over a highly skilled Embrun team which included the elusive tournament scoring leader.
That left Ottawa Centre facing the current Bytown League leading and undefeated Southend team in the final.  Having lost to Southend in the regular season 5-3 the Ice Dogs knew the challenge ahead. In an end to end gem with highly contested puck battles in all areas of the ice and a massive performance from goaltender Sean Ragan, the Ice Dogs yielded 3 goals which proved to be too much as the final score saw Southend win 3-1.
Despite the loss, the team shone through and exemplifed
10 of the top qualities of a great teams - Effort, Honesty, Humility, Responsibility, Family Atmosphere, Resiliency, Leadership, Respect, Optimism and a Desire to Improve
The Ice Dogs grew as individuals this weekend and became a team.   Awesome work Ice Dogs!
