Public Consultation on the Future of our Arenas

2021-02-19

The City of Ottawa is the in the midst of a broad consultation process on the future of its recreational facilities. This is the time to have your say!

The City of Ottawa is the in the midst of a broad consultation process on the future of its recreational facilities.

It’s very important at this time for members of the OCMHA community to take the time to provide their input, as the policies that come out of this consultation could have a significant impact on the programs that the OCMHA runs in arenas like Brewer and McNabb. It could also impact the access that residents of the urban core, and particularly those without cars, have to recreational facilities.

The City has made it clear that it is looking to replace older, single-pad arenas with newer multiplexes. Given the land requirements associated with multi-pad arenas, one of the options being considered is the closure of urban arenas to consolidate pads in larger complexes, likely in outlying areas. The same is true of pools and other facilities.

The City is running public consultations this week and next, as well as an online survey that can be done until March 12.

The OCMHA will be engaging with the City to emphasize a number of points, including:
• Community arenas are extremely important to locally-based programs like those run by the OCMHA
• The urban arenas are accessible to and serve marginalized communities that cannot be served by suburban multiplexes
• The City should be increasing recreational facilities in the urban core, not decreasing them.
• Efficiencies can be gained by adding outdoor ice pads to single pad arenas, as was done at Kilrea.
• If arenas are to be consolidated, attention should be given to the location of multiplexes, so that urban communities continue to be served.

This is the time to have your say. Thanks for taking the time to participate and to provide your comments and ensuring that the OCMHA’s voice is heard
