Year End Message / AGM Notice

I want to thank all of our players, parents and volunteers for making 2021-2022 another great year of hockey. While we needed to work through pandemic-related challenges, including a shortened season, it was truly great to see the kids back on the ice for a more typical season of hockey.

OCMHA is lucky to have a large group of dedicated volunteers - we couldn't have done it without you! At this time, I want to highlight one person in particular, our Vice President, Peter Smith, who will be stepping back from his role with the OCMHA this year. Peter has been involved with OCMHA as a coach, convener and on the Executive longer than anyone else. He was here long before me. Not only has Peter continued to share his vast knowledge of how hockey administration works with the rest of the Executive, he has taken on way too many tasks to list.  He is also the chair of the Ottawa Year End Tournament. For everything you do and have done Peter, thank you. You will always be part of our OCMHA community. 

A few things to highlight from the year:

• Approximately 370 members played this year, which is about 15% less than in pre-pandemic years.

• Ice time continued to be a challenge because more than 10 ice pads were unavailable across the city this season. This meant that the amount of ice available was limited. In pre-pandemic days, a team’s ice time ranged from 2.4 to 2.5 hrs per week, but mixed with tournaments, it felt closer to 3 ice times per week. In 2021-22, most teams had, on average, 2.2 ice times per week. That, coupled with fewer tournaments, felt more like 2 ice times per week. With some rinks re-opening this fall, we hope to return to a more normal ice allocation.

• Refunds will be provided this year. The budget surplus is much larger than usual this season due to the reduced ice availability and unplanned shutdown. Amounts and details will be provided in the coming weeks.

Lastly, as we wind down the season and start to plan for the fall, it is time for our Annual General Meeting to be held 7:30pm Thursday May 26 via zoom.

2022 OCMHA AGM - May the 26th at 7:30pm

While nothing through COVID has been certain, we are optimistic that we will be able to have a full season in 2022-2023. As always, there is some turnover among the Executive.
