Statement from the President regarding Hockey Canada

2022-08-24

Message to OCMHA Families,

As we near the beginning of another hockey season, the OCMHA Executive would like to take a moment to reiterate the commitment of our organization to creating a fun, safe and welcoming environment for our young players to play and grow. We expect that most of you have heard of the troubling issues involving Hockey Canada and some of the elite and national team players.  We strongly support calls for accountability and significant organizational change at Hockey Canada.

At the house league level, where OCMHA teams compete, we affirm our commitment to uphold the values that we regularly communicate to our families and volunteers. There have been efforts in recent years to make the game more inclusive at this level. Gender expression training, Respect in Sport for coaches and for parents, efforts to deal with maltreatment and curb any sort of harassment of officials. We also have a zero-tolerance approach to harassment, bullying and violence of any kind, which has been firmly in place for several years.

While we have taken steps to provide a culture that prioritizes safety and inclusion for all, we will continue to build on our efforts and work towards this goal.  For that reason, we always encourage anyone witnessing or becoming aware of any behaviour that could potentially violate those standards to bring it to our attention so that we can address it without delay.

We would like to reiterate that the goal of the OCMHA is not to develop NHL players or to launch elite sports careers. Rather, the objective of the OCMHA is to create a fun environment for our players to grow and learn as people.  At all times, our volunteers try to model behaviour that will help our players become contributing members of a strong community. If they pick up a love for the sport and the skills to keep playing throughout their lives along the way, even better.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the President or the Director of Risk and Safety.
