Sharpshooters Hang Tough on the West Side of Town

Sunday morning saw a smiling and sugar-filled Sharpshooters team head to Dulude Arena to take on one of the league’s top teams from the West End Hockey Association.  While the opponents were tough, the Sharpshooters showed their mettle, hanging with the West Enders and sending a message that despite their defensive inclinations, they aren’t afraid to get into a high-scoring game from time to time.

Starting in net was none-other than Julia, who recovered from the unwanted excitement of her coach-dad’s inexplicable failure to bring her the goalie equipment to help with the task.  Nonetheless, Julia stood tough against an onslaught of West End shots.  Where the coach's line matching and poorly conceived in-game adjustments clearly did not measure up to the day’s challenge, Julia put on a spectacular show in net, making reflex save(s) and pouncing on pucks in her crease, getting stronger as the game went on and impressing Sharpshooter fans and opponents alike.  A big thanks to all the support from her teammates after the game! Well done Julia!

Out in front of Julia protecting the crease was Tavish, who took home the polka dot bowler hat on the strength of his incredible devotion to his team.  When the Sharpshooter defence needed a boost, Tavish didn’t need to be asked twice, throwing himself into the role with reckless abandon, sliding in front of pucks, diving to strip opponents and even getting in on the odd rush.  Congratulations Tavish on an incredible performance!

But it wasn’t just Tavish who played his best in the face of adversity.  To his right to start the game, Owen B. was a model winger, getting quickly to his position on the boards and winning the puck to set up his line-mate Nathaniel for his electrifying rushes all the way up ice.   Adding to the offence was Misha’s line, led by Misha and his relentless pursuit of the puck, with support from power forward Jack A. and the unflappable Carolyn, who really took off every time she decided to get both feet in on the action.  And no player was more dangerous that Owen N., who was virtually unstoppable when he took off with the puck and raced in on net.

The Sharpshooter forwards weren’t all about offence – wingers Giacomo and Nate were almost unbeatable on the boards, fighting for the puck and making sure that the speedy West End forwards could not get in on net.  Leur joueur de centre, Gregoire, était toujours en bonne position pour aider aux defenseurs tout comme son ami Colin, qui pense toujours à ses coéquipiers et qui ne se trouve jamais attraper quand l’équipe opposée lance son attaque.  And fortunately for Colin, he had lots of great help on defence, with Henry and swing-player Fionn, who used their blazing speed to get right on the West End forwards and make sure that they couldn’t make the plays they wanted to.

The always-resilient Sharpshooters now prepare for a rare mid-week game against another tough West End opponent before their extended road trip to Cumberland.  The coaches have already been pouring over tapes of Sunday’s game in order to redeem themselves and make the necessary tweaks to the team’s breakout and power play.  The big gameh takes place on Wednesday at 6 pm under the bright light and non-working heaters of Grandmaitre Arena.  Tickets are already going fast, so don’t delay! As always, kids under 12 and monkeys wearing Sharpshooter apparel get in free!
