Hi Hawks fans,

As your favourite Novice team heads towards the mid-point of the BMHL season, it’s time to stop and take stock of what this group has accomplished so far, and what you can look for in the months to come.  In order to give you an insider’s look at the team, we have managed to scoop notes from a few of the Atom scouts that have gathered in ever-growing numbers at Hawks home games.

To keep things fair, we have also managed to get copies of the coaching staff’s performance evaluations,  which should help you frame your complaints better as the year progresses.

Roster

9 – Boyd – An extremely agile skater with great puck skills, Boyd often surprises opposing players by using his sneaky stick to steal the puck.  When he does, he has a knack for turning the play right to the attack.  With each passing game, Boyd has generated more offence, and he has developed quite the quick wrist shot.  In the coming months, Boyd can work on keeping up his puck pursuit and going right to the net with that puck.

12 – Riley – A towering figure on the ice, Riley can always be counted on to make the big defensive play when his team desperately needs it.   He has also shown that he can use his deceptive speed to blow past defenders, as he is almost unstoppable when he decides to drive to the net.  Expect to see Riley continue to work on his defensive positioning when his mean coach decides to put him on defence.

15 – Julia – A great skater who provides a strong veteran presence in the Hawks’ zone, Julia is also one of best passers on the team, always finding a teammate with space to skate.  And when she dons the pads in net, she is all about the spectacular kick save.  In the coming months, Julia will be working on using her speed for quick break-outs, but never through the danger zone!

18 – Hugh – When he is in net, Hugh is a rock, almost unbeatable by Novice shots.  When he plays out, he is a monster at both ends of the ice– he is super fast and always on the puck , whether on the break or back in the Hawks’ zone.  Whether he believes his coach or not, Hugh can succeed in any position on the ice that he plays.  As we go forward, Hugh will keep working on seeing what he can do with two hands on the stick.

21- Carolyn - A superb goalie that gets better and better as the season goes on, Carolyn has been responsible for keeping the Hawks in numerous games.  And for a goalie, she shows remarkable offensive flair, generating some of the best shots on net the Hawks have seen all year.   When the calendar turns, watch for Carolyn to keep working on lifting that right foot – we’ll get it yet!.

24 – Ewan – A coach’s dream, Ewan is one of the Hawk’s most responsible players game in and game out, always in position to protect his goalie.  His effort never waivers for a moment.  However that doesn’t mean that he isn’t also blessed with smarts and offensive talent, as he regularly brings the fans to their feet with his powerful rushes down the wing.  Ewan can keep working on his quick first steps to break away from the pack.

27 – Fionn – A speedy and powerful skater, Fionn has really begun to make his presence known on the ice.  Fans have been delighted to see him right in the middle of puck battles, breaking out to use his big shot to create scoring chances.  Fionn will continue to improve the way he works together with his teammates, supporting and covering for each other.

30 – Henry – One of the Hawks super stick handlers who has added a strong passing game to his repertoire, Henry has the smarts to be a great set-up man.  In addition he, possesses an excellent burst of speed that confounds opposing defences, allowing him to put his slick dekes on display.  Watch for Henry to working on containing that burst of speed so that he stays onside

33 – Adrian – A dogged pursuer of the puck, Adrian is one of the Hawks’ best forecheckers who puts fear into opposing defences.  With two hands firmly in place, his strong stick almost always lets him come out of a scrum with the puck and launch a shot on net.  In the new year, Adrian will keep working on his agility and tightening up those turns.

39 – Joshua – No one could ever argue that Joshua does not give it his all when he is on the ice.  Strong and persistent when he chases the puck, he has developed an incredibly powerful shot that can beat any goalie.  Joshua is now working on staying on his feet after he unleashes his shot so he can dive in and get a rebound.

42 – Ethan – Despite being a rookie, Ethan is one of the Hawk’s most responsible players.  No matter where his coach puts him, Ethan is always anticipating the play and ensuring that he is back supporting his teammates.  Ethan is going to keep working on driving to the net and getting in on those rebounds.    In addition to his hockey skill, Ethan is also the best dancer on the team.

45- Drake – A powerful skater with some great moves, Drake has emerged as a clutch player and a real leader on the Hawk bench, and a player that other Hawks want to play with.  While he is excellent in his own end, Drake has developed a great wrist shot that continues to confound goalies around the BMHL.  As the calendar turns, Drake will continue working on making that quick first pass out of the zone, and perhaps firing that incredible shot just a bit lower.

Manager

Hetty  - Although you would never know it, this is Hetty’s first kick at the can as a team manager, and coaching aside, man does she have this machine firing on all cylinders.  Hetty has exceeded all expectations and then some.  If she can just deal with some nagging performance issues with her staff, she is a virtual lock for the non-existent Novice Manager of the Year trophy.

Probationary Coaches

Coach* Rob – Already on and off probation several times this year, Coach* Rob has encountered challenges with line-ups that involve more than four players or do not involve only even numbers.   That said, there is no doubt that he has the respect of the players and his player- calling voice on the bench is virtually unparalleled – when Rob calls for a line change, the players over at Careton also make a change. Another good quality that Rob possesses – he often remembers to come to practice.

Full Coaches

Jim -  If you ask any member of the Hawks’ coaching staff about Coach Jim’s coaching abilities, to a man, they will undoubtedly tell you that he is an excellent timekeeper.  A patient teacher with the kids and a calm presence on the bench, Coach Jim looks very good in a toque.

Eric Chernoff -  Coach Eric #1 was by far the best demonstrator of drills on the coaching staff – or at least he was that time he read the practice plan.  A good communicator who brings a wealth of New Brunswick hockey knowledge to the table, Coach Eric is an obvious candidate to replace Coach Matt when things fall apart.

Mike – A blessing when he agreed to join the Hawks’
coaching staff, Coach Mike has spent most of his time this year fixing mistakes made by other coaches.  He is an exceptional person and an even better coach.  Coach Mike also carries my equipment to my car most days.

Dave - Trainer Dave brings one of the most extraordinary trainer bags in the business to the Hawks bench.  Also, his unbridled enthusiasm on the bench brings an energy to the team (though we may need to bridle it soon).  But mostly he brings the trainer bag.

Matt - The nominal head of the OC Hawks operation, at this time of year Coach Matt makes his perennial appearance atop various Coach most likely to be replaced at mid-season” lists.  Only the excellent play of the kids has put him in a position to be on the `Coaches most likely to be replaced before the playoffs” lists.  And excellent they have been - once the kids have fully recovered from his tepid pre-game pep-talks, they really tend to come on strong in third periods.

Seriously, a huge thanks to Hetty and a great crew of assistant coaches.  You have all done great work to this point in the year, which makes it really easy to pass myself off as a head coach.   I am really looking forward to even better things in the New Year.

And to all the dedicated Hawks supporters and volunteers out there, merry Christmas, joyeux Noel, happy Hanukah, best wishes for the Holidays and we’ll hopefully see most of you back in 2017!

In the meantime, please be sure to visit the Hawks online store (shophawks.com) for all of your last minute gift needs.  Henry Chernoff bobbleheads are 2-for-1 until midnight on December 24th!

*Based on current progress, it is estimated that Coach Rob will attain full coach status sometime during the 2020-21 season.
